College day 1

Starting college at Colchester has really opened my eyes to so many different forms of art and it has only been the first week. We were asked to bring a sheet in from home, which at this point I had no idea what more a sheet could be used for other than to sleep on.
On the first day we looked at the artists Christo and Jean Claude. Who are best known for covering up huge monuments and buildings with vast amounts of cloth. The aim of their work was not only to make you appreciate the basic shapes and shadows of whatever they covered but to make you aware of the space around you.
Following on from this our task was to cover normal objects such as tables and chairs with our bedsheets and highlight the shapes that lay beneath. Although this quickly turned from covering every day objects with a bedsheet to creating a variety of abstract statues with chairs and other objects. This took me a while to get used to mainly because I was clueless on what things worked and what didn't, so it really ended up just experimenting in different ways that we could stack the chairs, balance the chairs on top of each other and by tieing the chairs together. This created some really interesting effects especially with the sheet being tied around and covering the composition.
Finally we did some gestural drawings using charcoal and compressed charcoal. The end result was interesting, whether this makes it good or not I'm not too sure.
